Overview

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a unique and effective psychological intervention rooted in the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). ACT aims to help individuals embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than fighting or feeling guilty for them. It focuses on using mindfulness and behavioural changes to increase psychological flexibility whilst focussing on your core values.

How ACT Works

ACT helps individuals focus on what they can control: their actions. By accepting what they cannot change and committing to actions that align with their values, individuals can improve their mental well-being. ACT integrates mindfulness strategies to foster an awareness and acceptance of the present moment.

Core Principles of ACT

ACT is based on six core processes that promote psychological flexibility:
Acceptance: Embracing thoughts and feelings without trying to change them.
Cognitive Defusion: Learning to perceive thoughts, images, and memories as what they are, not what they appear to be.
Being Present: Living in the moment and experiencing the world directly.
Self as Context: Recognizing the self as a constant perspective, independent of changing thoughts and feelings.
Values: Identifying what is most important in life.
Committed Action: Setting goals according to values and taking action to achieve them.

Difficulties that ACT can help with

ACT has been shown to be effective in treating a variety of psychological and behavioural issues, including:
Anxiety Disorders
Depression
Intrusive thoughts
Stress
